Hand-printed Limited Edition Linocuts
Steve Osborne is a printmaker specialising in hand-carved, hand-printed limited edition works created through the deceptively simple medium of linocut. Working primarily with reduction linocuts, his process is both meticulous and considered. From a single block of lino, Steve prints the lightest tone first, then progressively carves away the surface before printing each subsequent colour, building layer upon layer until the final, darkest impression is achieved.
Because the same block is continually cut away, the image can never be recreated—making each small edition inherently limited and highly collectible. In addition to reduction work, Steve also employs a multi-plate technique, where individual plates are carved for separate colours that meet cleanly like stencils, rather than overlapping.
His subject matter ranges from birds, wildlife and expansive landscapes to bold architecture, obscure mythologies (the more unusual the better), and elements of music culture. Based in Melbourne’s south-east—where ocean meets bushland, suburb meets city—Steve draws inspiration from the contrasts and textures of his surroundings.
Steve welcomes commissions, collaborations, and any opportunity to experiment with ink and imagination—so feel free to get in touch.
